Best hot-swappable keyboards
A hot-swappable keyboard lets you pull the switches out and press new ones in without soldering, so you can change the feel, replace a faulty switch or try a new type for the price of a set of switches. Check whether the sockets take 3-pin or 5-pin switches: 5-pin sockets accept both.
Quick answer The Keychron V5 Max is our top pick, followed by the Keychron V6 Max and Keychron K2 HE.

What to look for
3-pin or 5-pin sockets?
3-pin sockets take switches with a single plastic centre post. 5-pin sockets add holes for the two extra plastic legs some switches have, so they accept both kinds. On a 3-pin board you can still use 5-pin switches by snipping off the two small plastic legs.
How to swap a switch
Pull the keycap with a keycap puller, then grip the switch's top and bottom clips with a switch puller and pull it straight up. Line the new switch's metal pins up with the socket and press it straight down. Bent pins are the most common mistake, so check them first.
Magnetic and low-profile boards differ
Magnetic Hall effect keyboards have swappable sockets too, but they only take compatible magnetic switches, not standard mechanical ones. Low-profile hot-swap boards likewise need low-profile switches.
How we picked
We compared 232 keyboards with real Amazon listings and kept the 93 that meet all of this:
- Full size with number pad
Every pick fits, so the order is about what to look at first. Models that independent reviewers recommend come first, the most often recommended at the top. The rest follow, best known and best liked first, with the newest model of a line ahead of older ones. No brand pays to be listed or placed higher. Prices change daily, so we never print one; Amazon shows today's price.

Questions
What does hot-swappable mean on a keyboard?
The switches sit in sockets on the circuit board instead of being soldered, so you can pull them out and press new ones in by hand. You can change the feel or replace a faulty switch in minutes.
Are hot-swappable keyboards worth it?
If you're curious about different switches or want a keyboard that's easy to repair, yes. They usually cost little more than soldered versions, and a broken switch becomes a cheap fix instead of a new keyboard.
Can you put any switch in a hot-swappable keyboard?
Most standard MX-style switches fit most hot-swap boards, as long as the pin count matches the socket. Low-profile, optical and magnetic boards need their own switch types, so check what the maker lists as compatible.
Do hot-swap sockets wear out?
The sockets are rated for a limited number of swaps, often around 100 per socket, which is plenty for occasional changes. Pulling the same switches in and out constantly is what wears them.
